China’s ‘Spy Ship’

China has docked its research and space tracking vessel ‘ Yuan Wang-5’ at Hambantota port, Srilanka. Why it is called as China’s Spy Ship ??What are the intentions of the Chinese?? Why India is worried ?? and How can a Surveillance Ship of a foreign country be docked at Hambantota, Srilanka? Let us find out the answers.

What is Yuan Wang -5??

Yuan Wang 5 is Research and Space tracking vessel as it is described by China. China has 7 such Surveillance ships which is used for various research purposes. The vessel which is docked at Hambantota, Srilanka is the fifth ship of this fleet, Hence the name Yuan Wang-5. It’s a huge ship fitted with highly advanced Radars, antennas, sensors, and whatnot. Its specifications are mind-boggling. With 25000 ton weight, 620 ft length. It is one of the largest search vehicles exists in the world. It requires approx 450 crew to manage the vessel. China has the world’s strongest navy and Yuang Wang is part of the strategic support force. Yuan Wang-5 radar has a total range of approx 750 km and its sensors are so advanced that it can even track the path of satellites and even ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles)

But Why Srilanka ??

According to China, it has docked its survey vessel for replenishment purposes. But why at Hambantota, Srilanka?. It is because Hambantota port is developed by a Chinese company and Srilanka has currently leased Hambantota port to China for 99 years for commercial purposes. So practically China can do whatever it feels like with the port. Initially, Srilanka declined China’s request to dock Yuan Wang 5 at Hambantota port but later allowed with a pre-condition that it has to keep its Automatic Identification System (AIS) switched on Srilankan waters and not allowed to carry out any research activity. As Srilanka is hugely under debt and facing its worst ever economic crisis. Srilanka didn’t want to anger its masters i.e China as Srilanka has total debt of around 7 bn dollars from China only.

China’s advance in the Indian Ocean

China already has access to Karachi port and Gwadar port. China is also making moves in Combodia, Seychelles, and Mauritius to East African countries. China has sent survey vessels to IOR(Indian Ocean Region) before to map the ocean and other data. China has also sent nuclear and conventional submarines to IOR under the pretext of anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since 2013.

India’s Concern over China’s Spy Ship

India strategically and diplomatically pressurized Srilanka to deny entry of Chinese vessels at Hambantota. Srilanka first agreed to India’s demands but later fell prey to Chinese debt diplomacy. India is worried for various reasons. First and foremost because docking of Chinese ships at Hambantota can act as a precursor for other Chinese vessels and even warships to use this port regularly. In addition, China’s Spy Ship can snoop on Indian satellites using its advanced radars.

Yuan Wang-5 has a research range of approx 750 km and is currently docked at Hambantota, Srilanka. India’s many important strategic and defense locations are situated near Srilanka the Head office of the Southern Command of Airforce is located in Kerala, and Also Head office of the Southern command Naval force is situated at Cochin, and India has 6 big ports in the southern region. Two big launching ranges of Satellites are also situated in the southern part of India. Kodankulam and Kalpakkam Nuclear reactors are also in the range of Yuan Wang’s radars.

India is worried because China’s Spy Ship can snoop on India’s strategic data and can use it to India’s disadvantage at the time of any mishappening between the two countries.

Recently, India has supported Srilanka in its difficult times. India has lent nearly 3.8 bn dollars to Srilanka to come out of its economic crisis. Indian navy also gifts Dornier-228 a maritime patrol aircraft to the Srilankan airforce. India is trusting Srilanka to be its strong ally against rising Chinese hegemony over the Indian Ocean. India is monitoring the current situation strongly. Let’s see what the time unfolds…
